Most parents can remember wearing “railroad track” braces when they were teens and are surprised to learn that Invisalign for Teens is now an option for their children. Knowing that clear aligners are available is a relief for both parents and teens because they offer a more practical, comfortable, and attractive way to bring teeth back into proper alignment.

Is Invisalign better than braces?

Invisalign is different than braces. Both straighten teeth using gentle force applied to the teeth to guide them into new positions gradually, but the similarity ends there. Invisalign’s clear aligners are custom-designed trays that fit snugly over the teeth. They are clear and comfortable so they can be worn up to 22 hours a day without discomfort. Most people will not even realize you are wearing clear aligners.

For teens in particular, there are several ways Invisalign is better than traditional braces:

• No embarrassment because of unattractive metal braces and wires.
• No worrying about the braces cutting your lips or gums when participating in sports or playing an instrument.
• You do not have to limit what you eat because you remove the clear aligners when you eat.
• You can remove your Invisalign® aligners for special occasions such as the Prom, Homecoming, Graduation, or a special date.
• No need to cover your mouth during photographs or when laughing – all your friends see are your beautiful teeth.
• Traditional braces are prone to problems, including bent wires, snapped rubber bands, and brackets that come loose. Invisalign® straightens your teeth without these issues.
• Like most teens, your schedule is probably already packed. Adjustments to your braces every two weeks take you away from school, activities, and friends. With clear aligners, there are fewer appointments.

Can kids get Invisalign® clear aligners?

It depends. For Invisalign to work effectively, kids must have most or all of their permanent teeth to be candidates for clear aligners. Their mouths must be fully matured, with little additional jawbone growth anticipated. Dr. Makhoul evaluates each patient on an individual basis to determine whether they are mature enough to use clear aligners.

Children and teens with severe malocclusions may require metal braces for successful treatment. Invisalign® is designed for teens with mild to moderate straightening needs.

How long does Invisalign take to straighten teeth?

Invisalign® for teens usually takes 12-18 months to straighten teeth if you wear them 20-22 hours a day. Taking them out occasionally for special events isn’t a problem, but if you regularly leave them out or wear them only a few hours a day, they are less effective, and treatment takes longer.

How often do you have to wear clear aligners?

We recommend wearing your Invisalign trays every day and night, only removing them to eat, drink, brush and floss your teeth, and clean the aligner. The longer you keep them in place each day, the more improvement you will see. Remember that you can leave them out for special events but wear them as often as possible for the best results.

How can Invisalign affect a teenager?

Teens are self-conscious about everything from their appearance to how they interact with their peers. They may worry about others teasing them, being unable to go out to eat with friends (it can be embarrassing to get food stuck in your braces), or fear that they will have to give up playing the trumpet or flute. Fitting in, managing their social lives, and pursuing their interests can all be affected if they wear traditional braces to straighten their teeth.
