Orthodontics is a specific area of dentistry focusing on straightening crooked or misaligned teeth and jawbones. Most orthodontic treatment focuses on guiding teeth into their proper positions, so they meet properly for speaking, eating, and smiling. Dr. Makhoul is highly experienced in orthodontics, adept at making the orthodontic treatment process gentle and comfortable for even his youngest patients. Thoughtful care and clear explanations of the orthodontic process remove children’s fears and make getting braces less traumatic.

Dr. Makhoul offers traditional braces and Invisalign, an innovative set of aligners ideal for patients with mild to moderate misalignment. With Invisalign, no one needs to know you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. The aligners are clear, comfortable, and removable for easy care and convenience.

How Early Can You Start Orthodontic Treatment?

Evaluating your child’s dental alignment can start as young as age 7. Once all or most permanent teeth erupt, your child can begin orthodontic treatment. We can assess their oral health and advise a treatment timeframe if the teeth are crooked, crowded, or misaligned.

We recommend waiting until your child is responsible enough to wear braces, aligners, or retainers and take proper care of them. Most children get braces between ages 10 and 14. There is no upper age limit for braces. Many adults who did not get braces as children choose Invisalign to correct crooked teeth so they can transform their smile without the limitations of metal braces.

What are the Best Options for Straightening Teeth?

Traditional braces and Invisalign clear aligners are both appropriate options for correcting misaligned or crooked teeth. Conventional braces provide the most effective correction for patients with severe misalignment. However, most teens and adults need only mild to moderate correction. For these patients, Invisalign offers several advantages, including:

  • Aesthetics – Invisalign clear aligners are almost invisible.
  • Comfort – The aligners can be removed for eating and drinking and fit snugly without cutting the lips or gums.
  • Safety – Patients do not have to worry about damage from wires or brackets.
  • Efficiency – Many patients see excellent results in a shorter time frame with Invisalign.
  • Convenience – Invisalign braces are removable for easy brushing and flossing of the teeth. Fewer orthodontic appointments are needed because patients switch aligners every few weeks at home.
  • Fewer Restrictions – There are no dietary restrictions with Invisalign, so patients can eat anything they enjoy. Participating in contact sports is also fine since no wires or brackets can be damaged.

Can Children Get Invisalign?

Yes, children can get Invisalign. We recommend waiting until they are in their teens, usually 12 or 13 years old, so they are mature enough to wear the aligners consistently and care for them properly.

How Frequently Do You Need to See an Orthodontist?

The frequency of your appointments with Dr. Makhoul depends on whether you have traditional braces or Invisalign and the severity of the needed correction. Because you can switch out your aligners at home every two weeks, you do not need to see the doctor as often with Invisalign. Most patients see Dr. Makhoul every three months if they are using Invisalign. Monthly appointments are necessary for patients with conventional braces.

How Long Does It Take to Straighten Teeth?

Orthodontic treatment can take anywhere from nine months to three years, depending on the severity of the misalignment. It may take longer if conventional braces are needed. With Invisalign, we can straighten teeth for most patients in a year.

Are Braces Painful?

Conventional braces can be uncomfortable because they forcefully move multiple teeth simultaneously. The wires and brackets may irritate the gums and inside the lips. Invisalign aligners are more comfortable. Each time you switch to a new aligner, you may feel mild discomfort for a day or two, but this fades quickly.
