Mission Viejo Dental Crowns | Porcelain Crowns Laguna NiguelA dental crown, also known as a cap, is used to protect and/or strengthen a tooth structure that has been damaged. The dental crown covers the surface of the tooth and restores it to its original size and shape.

There are several different types of dental crowns, including porcelain crowns which are fused to metal, and ceramic crowns, which are all porcelain with no metal. At the office of Dr. E. M. Makhoul, our Mission Viejo dentist can provide you with a smile that is all natural-looking by matching the ceramic crown to the natural color of your teeth. With the ceramic crowns, you also get a beautiful smile that will last for a long time because ceramic crowns have been proven to last for many years.

Please call the office of E. M. Makhoul, DDS, in Mission Viejo to discuss the benefits of porcelain dental crowns:(949) 596-0296 .

Ceramic dental crowns may be recommended for:

  • Covering a tooth where a root canal was done
  • Covering a misshapen or discolored tooth on the tooth
  • Protecting a chipped, weakened or fractured tooth or the tooth
  • Protecting a tooth that has had a large filling
  • Attaching a bridge

The dental crown process

During your first appointment with our experienced dentist, molds will be created to make your crown. With this same mold, a temporary crown will be created for you to use while the permanent crown is being created. The temporary crown is usually worn for about two weeks. To prepare the tooth for your temporary crown, Dr. Makhoul will shape the tooth to fit the crown, and also ensure that the tooth has no decay or infection. After the tooth is prepared and the temporary crown placed, your bite will be checked.

When your permanent dental crown is ready you will come in for your second appointment. At this visit, the temporary crown is removed, and the tooth is cleaned and prepared for your new crown. After the new crown is placed, and is checked for accurate spacing and bite.

Dental Crowns vs. Dental Bridges

If you are missing one or more teeth, a dental bridge is usually recommended. This is made up of two crowns placed on either end, and false tooth or teeth, in the middle. Using a bridge helps to prevent the remaining teeth from moving out of place, and also improves one’s ability to speak and chew their food properly.
