Temporomandibular joint disorder, more commonly known as TMJ or TMD, is the name given to over a dozen conditions that can impact the proper alignment of the jaw. Symptoms of TMJ may include clicking or popping noises when eating, grinding noises when chewing, and pain around the jaw joint. TMJ may also result in chronic headaches, neck, shoulder and backache, and changes to posture and balance.
To reduce the symptoms of TMJ, alignment must be restored. This can be accomplished through a number of neuromuscular treatments and restorative services. Correcting the position of the bite can help with the alignment of the jaw, making Invisalign® a possible tool in the treatment of TMJ. However, this orthodontic option is not designed as a neuromuscular device and should not be relied on as a stand-alone TMJ treatment.
What Invisalign Does
Like all orthodontic treatments offered at our Mission Viejo office, Invisalign is used to correct malocclusion such as:
- Overbite and underbite
- Cross bite and open bite
- Tooth crowding and crooked presentation
- Gaps and spaces in between teeth
When bite issues are present, the jaw and surrounding muscles may be forced to work harder, which can cause TMJ or exacerbate an existing condition. In these cases, bite restoration with braces, Invisalign or Six Month Smiles® may be able to eliminate the problem. During your initial consultation for orthodontic services, Dr. Makhoul will assess jaw alignment to determine what issues are present and discuss all of the services that could prove beneficial for the health, appearance, and comfort of your smile.
