Invisalign® are sometimes referred to as “clear braces.” However, these two orthodontic treatments are not actually the same thing. Clear braces are still braces. Invisalign are not braces at all. Let’s look a bit closer at what this means for patients who are considering orthodontic treatment at our Mission Viejo office.
Clear braces, also known as tooth-colored braces, are comprised of see-through wires and brackets. Attached to the front of teeth, the clear brackets are strung with arch-wire, allowing teeth to be pulled into their optimal position through manual adjustments.
Clear braces may offer a short-term orthodontic solution for younger patients, but those whose jaw has set will likely need this treatment for several months. During your initial consultation, Dr. Makhoul will evaluate the extent of your malocclusion and help you determine if tooth-colored braces are the best solution for your needs.
The Invisalign system uses a series of removable aligners that push teeth into their correct position over the course of six to 18 months. Made of a clear and soft plastic, Invisalign aligners can be removed for eating and oral care, and may offer several practical and aesthetic benefits to some patients.
Instead of manual adjustments of arch-wire, Invisalign works through small changes in each progressive set of aligners, making treatment slightly less invasive. However, this solution may not be suitable for patients with more pronounced malocclusion.
