  • Increased sensitivity to hot and cool temperatures
  • A pimple or sore on the gums
  • Darkening of tooth enamel
  • Gum swelling or tenderness
  • Toothache

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, Mission Viejo family dentist Dr. E.M. Makhoul can examine your teeth and gums to determine if an infection is present and provide fast treatment to help eliminate pain and prevent more significant issues from occurring.

Untreated, an infected tooth may result in tooth loss. Tooth infection may also increase risks for other oral and systemic health problems including heart attack and stroke. In rare instances, an abscessed tooth can increase risks for brain infection as well.

Root Canal Procedure

The root canal procedure is completed in our Mission Viejo office and can be done with or without sedation. Because the tooth itself is already dead, there is actually little to no discomfort associated with a root canal, but nervous patients often benefit from sedation dentistry options and Dr. Makhoul keeps these available for just such instances.

To perform a root canal, a small access hole will be made through which tiny dental instruments can be used to remove debris and infection. Once the tooth has been cleaned and flushed, antibiotics may be injected before the access hole is sealed. At this point, a restoration will be created to cover the tooth and protect it from future damage.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are the most common restoration used for teeth impacted by infection. At our Mission Viejo practice, dental crowns are manufactured off-site, enabling us to ensure they are crafted out of the highest quality materials and designed to fit seamlessly into your smile.

Immediately following your root canal, a temporary crown will be placed. This dental crown will be worn while we await the completion of your customized restoration – a process that typically takes around two weeks. Once your personalized dental crown has been completed, you will return to our office to have it affixed. If cared for properly, this dental crown could last for a lifetime, protecting your natural tooth while providing complete restoration of strength and beauty.
