Many patients fear those two little words, but at Dr. E. M. Makhoul’s dental office in Mission Viejo there is no need to be afraid of this routine procedure. Most people fall asleep to some relaxing music while Dr. Makhoul performs the procedure.
What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal is used to repair a badly decayed or infected tooth. During the procedure, Dr. Makhoul removes the nerve, bacteria, and decay from inside the affected tooth, cleans the chamber inside your tooth and seals the area.
The nerve tissue and pulp inside your tooth need to be removed when they are damaged because if left untreated, bacteria will multiply within the pulp chamber causing infection or an abscessed tooth. Having a root canal will save your tooth from further decay which would require it to be removed.
When Do You Need a Root Canal?
With regular dental checkups and a good daily dental hygiene habit, you may never need a root canal. But if you begin to suffer these signs, you should contact our office for a consultation:
- A recurring pimple on the gums
- Sensitivity to hot and cold over a long period of time
- Severe tooth pain
- Swelling or tenderness of the gums
- Darkening of the tooth
What to Expect After a Root Canal
Although the root canal procedure has a reputation for being painful, most patients report that it feels similar to having a filling placed. Dr. Makhoul strives to give all of our patients a pain-free dental experience.
Following the procedure, your tooth may feel sensitive, but any discomfort can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications. Most patients return to normal activities the next day.
Root canal treatment is highly successful and the tooth repair usually lasts a lifetime.
