At our office in Mission Viejo, we offer patients a variety of options to replace missing teeth. A dental bridge is an excellent solution for many patients.
What Is a Fixed Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is literally a bridge over the gap left by missing teeth that allows you to replace the missing teeth with artificial teeth, also called pontics. The pontics are attached to the bridge and held in place by crowns on two anchoring teeth on either side of the gap.
In consultation with Dr. E. M. Makhoul, you will discuss whether a dental bridge is the right solution for you and whether you would benefit from a fully ceramic bridge or a metal and ceramic bridge.
Why Should I Get a Fixed Dental Bridge?
In general, dental bridges are a good option for:
- Filling the space left by missing teeth.
- Upgrading a removable partial denture to a more permanent solution.
- Maintaining your facial shape.
- Preventing your other teeth from drifting out of position.
- Restoring the function of your teeth for better chewing and speaking.
- Restoring the beauty of your smile.
What Is the Process for Getting a Dental Bridge?
Getting a dental bridge generally requires two or more visits. Although with the FIRSTFIT™ technology option, you can have your new bridge in only two appointments. FIRSTFIT™ provides maximum quality with minimum time. FIRSTFIT technology allows us to prepare and seat your bridge in the same appointment. It eliminates the need for temporaries and requires one less dental appointment to achieve your restored smile.
At each appointment, we strive to make patients as relaxed and comfortable as possible. You can sit back and relax, listening to music, while we restore your smile.
During your first visit, we will take an impression of your prepared teeth for our Master Ceramist to fabricate the bridge specifically for your teeth.
If you are receiving a traditional bridge, Dr. Makhoul will also prepare your two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth) to receive the permanent bridge by removing a portion of their enamel to allow for the crown placement that will hold your bridge in place. He will then place a temporary bridge until your permanent bridge is seated. FIRSTFIT patients, however, do not need temporaries because we will not prepare your teeth until your second appointment.
On your second visit, Dr. Makhoul will attach and adjust your permanent bridge for a proper fit and a spectacular new smile. FIRSTFIT patients will have their teeth prepared and their permanent bridge placed all in one appointment. And with FIRSTFIT technology, we remove up to 75% less of the adjacent supporting teeth than with traditional bridges.
Caring for your permanent bridge will require a good daily dental hygiene routine that includes brushing and flossing in addition to regular dental checkups.
