Preparing for Dental Implants
To prepare for your dental implants, Dr. Makhoul will develop an individualized treatment plan based on your specific needs. Dr. Makhoul will thoroughly evaluate your dental health, including:
- Dental x-rays
- Molds of your teeth
- Removal of damaged tooth, if present
Depending on your bone density, you may need a jawbone graft to provide a more solid foundation for your dental implant or you may be a candidate for a quicker restoration, such as All-On-4.
A variety of options are available depending on how many teeth are missing or damaged, the health of your remaining teeth and gums, and the strength of your jaw. Dr. Makhoul will discuss your individual needs, your variety of options, and your customized treatment plan in detail during your consultation and examination.
Traditional Dental Implant Process for Single Tooth
The first step in the dental implant process is to insert the dental implant post that will serve as your new tooth root. During this surgery, you will be placed under anesthesia and the post will be placed in your jawbone.
Healing from the implanting of the post takes several weeks to six months. We want to ensure that your bone is supporting the implant and that your gums are sufficiently healed before the last step in the process – attaching the artificial tooth to the abutment at the top of your implant.
The new artificial tooth is made from durable, tooth-colored material so that it will blend seamlessly into your smile.
Caring for your dental implants is much like caring for your natural teeth. We will provide complete instructions for good care habits once your treatment is complete.
Dental implants are not the right solution for every patient. During your consultation, Dr. Makhoul will discuss all of your options for correcting missing and damaged teeth, such as dental bridges and dentures. If you need to replace multiple teeth, Dr. Makhoul offers several options.
Options for Dental Implants
Implant Fixed Bridges
Implant bridges use the same dental implant root as a single dental implant, but bridges can be used to restore two or more adjacent teeth. These restorations are called “fixed” bridges because the bridge of teeth is affixed to the supporting implant structure. An implant supported fixed bridge can eliminate an ill-fitting removable partial denture and provide you with a more comfortable chewing experience.
Implant Supported Dentures
An implanted supported denture is secured by dental implants, but it still provides the convenience of being removable. Implant supported dentures are secured in place with a snap or clip, like the Locator attachment described below. The overdenture locks into place with two to five supporting dental implants. Benefits of implant supported dentures include:
- Up to 90 percent chewing efficiency of natural teeth
- Eliminates or significantly slows the shrinkage of the jaw and lower portion of the face which missing teeth can cause
- Prevents a sunken-in appearance that traditional dentures can give your face
Implant supported dentures allow you the flexibility of dentures with the more secure fit and function provided by dental implants.
ALL-ON-4® Treatment Concept
The All-On-4 treatment concept is a minimally invasive solution with a fixed full-arch dental restoration that provides high patient satisfaction with their results. Benefits of All-on-4 include:
- Immediate function! Graftless treatment allows for a fixed full-arch prosthesis on the day of surgery. You don’t have to wait months for bone grafting before loading implants.
- Achieve full-arch rehabilitation with only four implants.
- Less costly and quicker restoration compared to traditional implant procedures.
With the All-on-4 treatment concept, bone grafting is unnecessary. Two posterior implants are tilted at a 45 degree angle to utilize available bone for support. Combined with two anterior implants, the fixed provisional bridge is fully supported.
The implant bar is similar to All-On-4 implants in that it uses only four implants instead of the traditional five to eight implants it traditionally takes to support a full arch restoration. An implant bar can provide high quality results in a short amount of time. Benefits of an implant bar include:
- Avoiding bone grafting
- Lower cost than traditional implants
- Immediate results
Patients can come to our office with damaged and decayed teeth or without teeth and leave the same day with fully functioning teeth. Then in six months when the gums have completely healed, a strong, permanent set of teeth can be fitted for your permanent restoration.
Locator Implant Attachment
Locator R-Tx™ Removable Denture Attachment System is the newest advancement in the latest, redesigned attachment system for dental implants by Nobel Biocare. Locator attachments provide several benefits for our patients, including:
- Self-aligning ability
- Angulation versatility
- Greater resiliency
- Exceptional durability
With Locator attachments, you can enjoy chewing more comfortably and naturally, knowing that your overdenture is fitted securely. The self-aligning feature allows you to easily seat your overdenture without needing perfect alignment and without causing damage to the components of the attachment.
Abutments are the attachment points between the dental implant and the tooth restoration. Using custom abutments allows for more flexibility and individualized adjustment in your final restoration. The benefits of custom abutments include variable:
- Abutment height
- Emergence profile
Custom abutments are designed and milled with precision using CAD/CAM technology to meet the needs of each individual patient.
